Psalms for Healing

So, what is a good Bible verse for healing?

The Book of Psalms is filled with encouraging and hopeful Scripture to pray over illness, injury, and even a broken heart!

Healing Psalms can be a powerful source of comfort for those in need. King David wrote the Psalms as prayers and poems to help him deal with his own difficult times, so they are very personal and often reflect what we’re feeling during hard times. They offer an opportunity to express our emotions without fear of being judged or ridiculed because God is always listening.

It’s also cathartic to speak aloud about all that we’re going through instead of keeping it inside until it consumes us from within. Even if you don’t feel like talking, just reading over the words can provide relief when you know there is someone else who cares about your pain right alongside you.

These Psalms for healing are filled with images of God’s comforting presence. Have you ever thought what it would be like to stand in the middle of a mountain range during an earthquake or giant avalanche? I’m sure it would feel like the world is crumbling.

When a friend or family member is sick or healing from trauma, these Psalms of healing will surely encourage them!

At those times, I have to remind myself of all that God promises. He promises that when our world is falling down around us, we can take shelter and find strength in him.

Dear friend, that means that when we are in over our heads and feel as if the worries of motherhood are about to overtake us; when we cry out to God, he doesn’t leave us to flounder. No! He hears us. He saves us. He stays near to heal our broken hearts.

But more than that, when we enter God’s grace-filled presence, He FORGIVESHEALS (praise God, he heals our diseases!)… REDEEMSCROWNS…and SATISFIES. Is there any other person, place, or thing that can make such promises? God isn’t just out to give us the bare minimum. His abundance knows no limit, and he crowns us with it.

Psalm 139:13-16

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:13-16 NIV

Trust God and Remain Righteous, Even When It Is Hard!

Have you ever felt so weighed down by sorrow or fear that you can’t even lift your head? I can imagine that’s what these writers felt when they penned these Psalms about hope and healing, and I absolutely love how real they are.

Psalm 103:1-5

Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles. Psalm 103:1-5

Psalm 91:4

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings, you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Psalm 91:4

When I’m in that state of deep sadness or anxiety, I need more than a laugh or a cup of tea. I need someone to bring in the big guns and get me out of my mess. That’s when God steps in to protect.

He is my strong shield. He is my protection. He is the reason I can lift my head and continue the fight.

Psalms for Healing Psalm 91 4

In Psalm 42, David actually addressed the source of his anxiety, his soul. The word “soul” in Hebrew is a term that has a variety of meanings. In this context, it expresses emotion. So, David basically asked his emotions directly why they are so disturbed.

He recognized that his emotions were NOT his reality and challenged those emotions to hope in God, rather than run wild. He decided to remain righteous and praise God, no matter what his emotions told him to do. How powerful is that?

We have that same authority. We can challenge our emotions and choose to praise God and remain righteous, regardless of what our feelings are telling us.

Psalm 42:11

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 42:11

Psalm 3:3

But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. Psalm 3:3

Call Out to God When You Are At Your Lowest Point

Here, these faithful Psalmists paint vivid images of themselves alone at the ends of the earth, calling out to God for help. And guess what? God swooped in to rescue them. He’s there to rescue you too, sweet friend. He longs to turn your crying into dancing and to clothe you with joy.

Psalms for Healing Psalm 3 3

Psalm 30:8-12

To you, Lord, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy: “What is gained if I am silenced, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness? Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me; Lord, be my help.” You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever. Psalm 30:8-12

When we call out to God, we find solid ground, comfort, and strength. What an amazing God we serve! He is strong and mighty, yet gathers us under his wing, as a mother hen gathers her chicks. When we have reached the end of our rope, when the circumstances of our lives are more than we can bear, let’s remember that in our God, we can find hope, healing, and the strength to carry on.

Psalms for Healing Psalm 30 8-12

Psalm 61:1-4

Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. Psalm 61:1-4

Remember that your sickness is only temporary!

Jesus promises in Revelation 21 that when He returns, He will bring a new heaven and a new earth. All of the ugly parts of this world will pass away. That means no more death or disease, no more suffering or hospitals, no more tests or bad news.

Psalms for Healing Psalm 61 1-4

He will do away with all of those things, leaving only His wonderful light. The Psalmists seemed to understand that as they penned these Psalms for healing.

Psalm 102:25-27

In the beginning, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Anchor Your Strength and Hope To God

Psalm 18:28-29

You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. Psalm 18:28-29

Lamps in Biblical times used oil as fuel to create light. I need God to be my fuel to keep me burning. His is the only strength that doesn’t fail. With him as my power source, I can conquer anything this life throws at me.

Psalms for Healing Psalm 18 28-29

Psalm 62:5-6

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken. Psalm 62:5-6

But, God is so much more than a power source. He is our hope and our salvation. I’ve always heard God called our “horn of salvation,” but I really had no idea what that meant.

Psalms for Healing Psalm 62 5-6

In these particular Psalms for healing, a horn is not a musical instrument or means of attack, like the horn of an animal, but a mountain peak.

David, the psalmist, often hid in caves and among mountain peaks as Saul sought to end his life, but David ran to God as his safe retreat.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105

Let God be the light that guides your path to healing!

Psalms for Healing Psalm 119 105

Psalm 18:2

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18:2

God is our rock, the foundation on which we build our faith and our lives, where we cast our anchor when life is stormy. He is our fortress, where we retreat when we are weak and battle weary. He is our deliverer, lifting us out of the strife and struggle of this life and bringing us to safety.

Psalms for Healing Psalm 18 2

He is our refuge, where we run when we are alone and scared. He is our stronghold, having fought and conquered enemy territory through the resurrection of his Son, Jesus.
