Bible Verses About Believing In God

Believing in God is a personal decision, but cultural, religious, and social influences can also influence it.

In this article, we will explore some of the most powerful bible verses about believing in God and how they can help us to have faith in Him.

Exodus 3:14-15b

God said to Moses, “I Am Who I Am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I Am has sent me to you.'”…This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

Exodus 3:14-15b ESV

When God commissioned Moses to bring the Israelites out of Egypt, he asked God what His name was. God answered, “I Am.”

God reveals Himself as I Am. That sounds like an unfinished sentence. Do you think Moses raised an eyebrow and leaned a little closer to the burning bush for God to finish His sentence?

Probably not because Moses had a lot more insight into the meaning of that phrase than we do. There’s another time God used the “I Am” phrase, which helps us understand what He was telling Moses.

Revelation 1:8

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Revelation 1:8 ESV

So, God tells us He is the I Am from the beginning to the end. He is self-existent outside of all creation. This statement declares God’s sovereignty, authority, and power. Believing in God is taking Him at His word and trusting He is who He says He is.

Jesus also used this terminology to describe Himself when speaking to the Jews as they questioned Him.

John 8:58

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”

John 8:58 ESV

Bible verses like this show us that God does exist, has always existed, and that Jesus and God, along with the Holy Spirit, are one God. Believing in God means that we believe in the Trinity.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 ESV

There is one God who gives gifts of the Spirit and empowers us to do the work He calls us to do.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22

And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 ESV

God establishes us in Christ and seals us with His Spirit until the day of redemption.

Isaiah 43:10-11

“You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I, I am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior.

Isaiah 43:10-11 ESV

The New Testament declares Jesus as the Savior of the world. But Isaiah shows us again that God and Jesus are the same. In this verse, God says that He is Lord and Savior.

Isaiah 44:6

Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his redeemer, the Lord of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.

Isaiah 44:6 ESV

Again, the names of Jesus are interchangeable with God in the Old Testament. He is the Lord, the King, the Redeemer, and the Lord of hosts.

Isaiah 45:18

For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): I am the Lord, and there is no other.

Isaiah 45:18 ESV

Isaiah, filled with the Spirit, proclaims the sovereignty of God. I love that Isaiah brings out the plan of God when He created the world–“He formed it to be inhabited!”

What a beautiful truth! God’s desire for the world is for people to inhabit the planet, learn of His love, and receive His gift of eternal life. Eternal life is only given to those who believe in God and Jesus’s work on the cross.

Psalm 33:6

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.

Psalm 33:6 ESV

Psalm 33:9

For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.

Psalm 33:9 ESV

God is in control and has created all things with His mighty power. We can be confident and encouraged to believe in God because of His mighty power.

Jeremiah 14:22

Are there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are you not he, O Lord our God? We set our hope on you, for you do all these things.

Jeremiah 14:22 ESV

It’s our God who controls all things. Believing in God means that we can be totally dependent on Him to give us what we need to be happy and content in this world.

Jeremiah 32:17

Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.

Jeremiah 32:17 ESV

Our confidence is in His power, not our strengths. In times of trouble, it is important to remember that God is all-powerful. There is nothing too hard for Him. Nothing too complicated that He can’t work out.

Isaiah 40:28

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.

Psalm 54:4

Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.

Psalm 54:4 ESV

When we truly believe in God, we believe that he is truly here to help us in every way. He honestly wants the very best for us but, more importantly, He wants us to believe and trust that this is true.

Psalm 86:10

For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God.

The book of Psalms contains verses about God’s wondrous works. I encourage you to find a reading plan for the book of Psalms because it has many Bible verses about believing in God.
