What is a Stronghold?
Oxford dictionary defines a stronghold as “a place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack.” It is supposed to be a place of refuge and protection. As Christians, God is our stronghold. He is our safe space and our place of refuge. When we walk in his word and press into him, he is faithful to replace the bondage of sin with the freedom of his covering.
I mention this now because so often strongholds are thought of in the negative. And in those cases, we are speaking of the spiritual strongholds that keep us from experiencing the fullness of the blessings and glory of God in this life. These strongholds are the sinful thoughts and actions that we are constantly drawn towards. The flames that we constantly entertain until they consume us.
Because of God’s great love for us, he gave us the possibility of freedom from these strongholds through Christ Jesus. Let’s take a deeper look into what the bible says about this gift of freedom in Christ.
What Does the Bible Say About Freedom From Spiritual Strongholds?
Spiritual strongholds are the battles that we face on the spiritual levels. They are the ploys of the enemy and the forces of evil that desire to devour us and keep us from eternal life with God. The bible gives us so many powerful truths about how we can be free from these strongholds. So we can let go and let God do what only He can do!
There is freedom in the Lord’s presence
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17 NIV
This freedom scripture tells us that in the presence of the Lord’s Spirit freedom is found. Knowing this we can find hope in the fact that when we are feeling the pressures of spiritual strongholds in our lives, we can look to the Father for peace.
In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. Ephesians 3:12 NIV
The freedom we receive through Christ gives us access to the throne of grace of our Father in Heaven. The freedom that comes from a life devoted to Christ gives us boldness and confidence, to walk in the authority of a child of God.
Our freedom comes from the sacrifice of Jesus
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36 NIV
There should be no question of your freedom. Once set free by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross you are free! You can walk in the knowledge of this and live your life according to this truth. The bondages and strongholds that once held you captive are no longer a threat. You are FREE indeed in the Lord.
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 NIV
Additionally, we must consider the sinful nature slavery that held us before we were set free in Christ. Because of this truth, we have to remember not to willingly walk back into that burden of sin.
We must flee from it and remain in Christ, knowing that we can use the truth of the knowledge that we are free to stand firm against the strongholds of the enemy.
How Do You Pray Against Strongholds?
Even with the knowledge that we are free from the strongholds of sin, there may be places in life when you feel as if you are struggling. Because we are not perfect and on a continual journey towards sanctification there may be times when we stumble and feel weighed down by the strongholds of the enemy.
It is during these times that we should not let lies of shame and guilt rob us of the authority we experience in the freedom covering of the Lord. Instead, we should pray for freedom. We should seek the Lord in freedom prayers and fight the enemy with the sword of the word of the Lord.
