You Are Chosen!

Train up a child in the way that they should go, And when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 NKJV

It seems like a daunting task training our children to follow Christ now and forever?

I admit while my children were young, carving out time to read my Bible became difficult. Let alone finding time to teach my children a strong Biblical foundation. Plus, what I taught my kids now would have to carry them through to their old age, so they would not depart from Christ. No pressure!

I was already at a disadvantage since I wasn’t raised in church and I’d never been to Sunday school. On the other hand, my husband was raised in church but had no intention of going back. So my children’s spiritual growth was my responsibility.

But I realized I wasn’t alone, God would help me with each step of this journey. After all, I was chosen by God to be a mother.

And you’ve been chosen as well.

Jesus’s mother, Mary, was chosen by God to raise His Only Son. And you’ve been chosen to raise your child to be a follower of Christ. God has hand-picked you to be a mother whether to your biological, adopted, foster or step-kids.

Yet, I still pondered on how to present Jesus to my children, I knew I didn’t want to shove Jesus at them. Because in my experience, I saw too many kids rejecting their Christian values when they went to college. Inwardly, I  cringe at the thought of my children rejecting Jesus.

I pondered how was I going to feed their souls? Getting Jesus into their lives, would not be as easy as sneaking cauliflower into their mac and cheese. Especially in a chaotic world filled with distractions vying for mine and my children’s attention.

“The goal of parenting isn’t to create perfect kids, It’s pointing our kids to the perfect God.” –Lindsey Bell

God called us to train the next generation of Christ-followers and He promises to equip us.(Hebrews 13:21). I know it seems difficult to raise your kids in the age of the technology where our children run to the internet for answers rather than ask their mothers. But God knows the times, and we were chosen to be mothers during this time.

As a matter of fact, I felt God nudge me to spend one-on-one time with my kids. I decided to spend half an hour with each child before bedtime. During that time, I would reveal to my children how I was chosen by God to be their mother.

AND I’d tell them, out of all the kids in the entire world, God picked YOU to be my child. Sweet, lopsided smiles would burst forth from these revelations.

But that’s not all we did. Each night we read passages from their Bible along with a book of their choice. And some nights my grade-schoolers might pour out their problems, presenting a perfect opportunity to inject a Biblical character into their troubles.

For instance, struggles with a sibling after they broke a treasured item brought Joseph’s story to life. Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery, yet Joseph forgave his brothers surely you could forgive your brother.

When I kissed them goodnight, I’d pray out loud over them, when they had to take a test or friends who hurt their hearts and when they were sick. Now that they are young adults, they still ask for prayers from me, which still touches this mother’s heart.

Turns out, God doled out similar advice to Susanna Wesley. She spent alone time with each of her eleven children,  an hour before bed on a rotating schedule. Two of Susanna’s children turned out to be famous ministers, John, and Charles Wesley, affecting Christianity throughout the world.

Susanna Wesley would cover her head with her apron and pray for two hours while her kids actually left her alone. She also vowed to spend more time with God rather on leisure entertainment. Ouch. With all due respect, but in my defense, how much “entertainment” was available in the 1700s?

I’m certainly no Susanna Wesley, I’ve yelled, spent too much time on my phone and I’ve stopped by car threatening to make my bickering children walk home. Despite my parenting mistakes, that obviously God knew I would make. I’ve  still been chosen by God to point my children to Christ.

And you’ve been chosen too!

You or raising another soul shining for Jesus, or who knows the next Billy Graham. Our world needs both!

Let’s Pray Together

Lord in Jesus’ name, we thank you for choosing each one of us to be mothers and for trusting us to train up our children in the way that they shall go. We pray that you will help us daily to raise the next generation of Christ-followers impacting the world around them. We declare our children will be on fire for Jesus and share the gospel with others. Help us Lord to raise the next Billy Grahams, the Wesleys, or the Kathryn Kuhlmans of the world.
