In a world that’s always buzzing with notifications, new trends, and endless scrolling, it’s easy to feel like everyone else’s life is more exciting than our own.
Social media makes it look like others are living these picture-perfect moments—vacations, cozy coffee dates, thriving relationships—and if we’re not careful, it’s all too easy to fall into the trap of FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out.
But what if we could flip that on its head and start embracing JOMO, the Joy of Missing Out?
JOMO doesn’t mean we suddenly lose our desire to experience new things or stop celebrating life’s big moments.
It’s about finding contentment and joy in what we have and in the season God has placed us in.
When we make gratitude the foundation of our lives, JOMO becomes a natural byproduct, freeing us from the cycle of comparison, envy, and restlessness.
Let’s look at some practical ways to turn FOMO into JOMO through gratitude and see how this shift can transform our hearts, minds, and even our relationship with God.

1. Gratitude Brings Contentment Right Where You Are
Philippians 4:11-12 tells us, “…I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty.”
Paul’s words remind us that contentment isn’t found in having everything we think we want. Instead, it’s about finding satisfaction in what we already have.
Gratitude is key to contentment. When we focus on what we’re thankful for, it shifts our attention away from what we might be missing and towards the blessings that fill our lives right now.
The next time you feel that creeping sense of FOMO, pause and make a quick mental list of three things you’re grateful for.
Whether it’s a warm home, good health, or the kindness of a friend, these simple acknowledgments anchor us to the truth that God has provided everything we need.
2. Embracing God’s Timing and Plan for Your Life
One of the reasons we feel FOMO is because it looks like others are hitting certain “milestones” faster or more successfully than we are.
Maybe someone is getting married, buying a house, or advancing in their career, and we start to wonder why we aren’t there yet.
This is when gratitude can help us refocus on God’s unique plan for our lives.
Jeremiah 29:11 assures us that God has “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
God’s timing is often different from ours, but it is always perfect. Instead of looking at what others have and feeling left behind, we can thank God for the season we’re in, trusting that He’s working everything for our good.
Try praying, “Thank you, Lord, for where I am right now. I trust Your timing and plan for my life.”
3. Finding Joy in Simplicity
The beauty of JOMO lies in the joy of simplicity. In our society, we’re encouraged to “do more, be more, and have more.”
But Jesus Himself led a simple life and taught us to value things that are eternal rather than temporary. He didn’t say, “Blessed are those with the most followers,” or “Blessed are those who have been to the most places.”
Instead, He taught us to be humble, loving, and content with little.
When we practice gratitude, we start to find joy in the little things: a quiet morning with coffee, a sunset walk, or a good conversation with a loved one.
Embracing JOMO means we no longer feel pressured to keep up with every trend. Instead, we can lean into the simple pleasures that God has placed in our lives.
Gratitude helps us see that even in the “mundane,” God’s goodness is always present.
4. Replacing Comparison with Thankfulness
2 Corinthians 10:12 says, “When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.”
Comparison only fuels FOMO and often leads to discontent and frustration. Instead of looking at others and feeling envious, gratitude shifts our mindset to one of thankfulness for what God has done in our own lives.
It’s a powerful practice to intentionally thank God for the blessings He’s given to others as well.

Practicing gratitude for others can look like this: “Thank you, Lord, for the ways you’re blessing my friend. Thank you for her joy, her success, her growth. I know you have unique blessings for me, too.”
This gratitude for others’ blessings can free us from the chains of envy and remind us that God’s blessings aren’t in short supply.
5. Trusting God’s Provision and Avoiding “Hustle Culture”
Our culture often glorifies the idea of the “hustle,” which says that the more we do, the more valuable or successful we are.
But when we’re constantly chasing achievements, it’s easy to feel FOMO about what we haven’t accomplished yet.
Gratitude helps us step off the treadmill of “more, more, more” and reminds us that God is our provider.
Matthew 6:31-33 tells us, “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’… But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
When we let gratitude lead, we start trusting that God will provide everything we need in His timing.
Practicing JOMO allows us to relax, knowing that our worth isn’t based on our achievements but on God’s love and provision.
6. Turning Social Media into a Tool for Gratitude
Social media can be a breeding ground for FOMO, but it doesn’t have to be. One way to practice JOMO is by using social media as a space to cultivate gratitude.
Instead of mindlessly scrolling, try using social media intentionally. Share posts that highlight what you’re thankful for, encourage others, or even take breaks from it entirely when you feel that it’s fueling discontent.
Another practice is to start a gratitude challenge with friends. Each day, post one thing you’re grateful for and encourage others to do the same.
When we turn social media into a tool for gratitude rather than comparison, it helps us see it as a place to lift each other up rather than one that breeds envy.
7. Finding Joy in the Present Moment
JOMO is really about being present and savoring the life we’re living now.
Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Gratitude allows us to appreciate the here and now, without constantly longing for the next big thing.
To practice being present, try setting aside a few moments each day to breathe, pray, and simply thank God for this day.

Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Instead of feeling like you’re missing out on someone else’s path, thank God for the path He’s laid before you.
When we live with gratitude, we stop wishing we were somewhere else, doing something else, and start appreciating the work God has given us to do.
