When we think about the birth of Jesus, our minds often go to Mary, the shepherds, or the wise men.
But did you know that Jesus’ family tree—His earthly lineage—includes some fascinating and unexpected women?
Yep, even way back in the Old Testament, God was weaving together a story of redemption and grace, and He chose to include some truly remarkable women in Jesus’ family line.
Matthew’s genealogy (found in Matthew 1:1-17) lists five women by name—a rare occurrence in ancient Jewish genealogies!
Their stories are full of courage, faith, and even a little scandal, but each one reveals something beautiful about God’s character and His plan for redemption.
Let’s dive in and meet them!

1. Tamar: The Story of Boldness and Redemption
Tamar’s story, found in Genesis 38, might surprise you. She was Judah’s daughter-in-law and was left widowed and childless.
In her desperation to secure her place in the family, she took matters into her own hands and disguised herself to ensure she’d have descendants.
While her actions might seem shocking, God used her situation to carry on the family line through her son, Perez.
Why It Matters:
Tamar’s story shows us that God can work through messy situations to bring about His purposes.
Even when things seem broken, God is in the business of redemption.
2. Rahab: The Faithful Outsider
Rahab’s story is found in Joshua 2. She was a prostitute living in Jericho, but her life changed when she chose to protect the Israelite spies who had come to scout the land.
Her faith in God spared her and her family when Jericho was destroyed.
Later, she became the mother of Boaz, making her part of the lineage of Jesus.
Why It Matters:
Rahab reminds us that faith in God is more important than our past.
No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done, God can use you for His glory.
3. Ruth: The Loyal Foreigner
Ruth’s story is found in the Book of Ruth, and it’s a beautiful example of loyalty and love.
She was a Moabite widow who chose to follow the God of Israel and stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, rather than return to her own family.
Ruth’s faithfulness led her to Boaz, her kinsman-redeemer, and their marriage continued the family line that would lead to Jesus.
Why It Matters:
Ruth’s life teaches us that God welcomes outsiders into His family.
Her story reminds us that our faith, not our background, is what connects us to God.
4. Bathsheba: The Redeemed Grief
Bathsheba’s story is found in 2 Samuel 11-12. She’s often remembered for her connection to King David’s sin, but her story doesn’t end there.
After the tragic loss of her first child with David, she became the mother of Solomon, who continued the lineage leading to Jesus.
Why It Matters:
Bathsheba’s story reminds us that God can bring beauty from ashes.
Even when we experience pain, loss, or mistakes, God’s grace and redemption can transform our lives.
5. Mary: The Humble Servant
Mary, of course, is the most well-known woman in Jesus’ lineage. A young, humble Jewish girl, she was chosen by God to bring His Son into the world.
Mary’s faith and willingness to trust God’s plan, even when it seemed impossible, make her an incredible example for all of us.
Why It Matters:
Mary’s story shows us the power of saying “Yes” to God.
Even when we feel unqualified or overwhelmed, God can do amazing things through us when we trust Him.
Why Does This Matter for Us Today?
So, why are these women—Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary—so significant?
Because their stories reflect the heart of the Gospel.
- God’s Grace is Bigger than Our Failures: Each of these women had challenges, past mistakes, or less-than-ideal circumstances, but God used them anyway. This reminds us that God’s grace covers everything.
- God Includes Everyone: Whether it’s a Canaanite prostitute (Rahab), a Moabite widow (Ruth), or a humble Jewish girl (Mary), God’s family is for everyone—no matter your background, past, or social status.
- God’s Plan is Perfect: Even when things seem chaotic or hopeless, God is always working. The lineage of Jesus is full of imperfect people, yet through them, God brought the Savior of the world.
Reflection
Take a moment to reflect on these women and their stories.
- What challenges are you facing that feel impossible?
- What parts of your past make you feel unworthy?
Let these women remind you that God’s love and grace are for you, too.
If God could work through their lives to bring about His perfect plan, imagine what He can do in your life! God’s story of redemption is still being written, and you’re part of it.
Let’s celebrate the amazing women in Jesus’ lineage and remember that we serve a God who redeems, restores, and includes us all!
