Bible Verses About Abortion

We’ve taken a good, hard look at the question “What does the Bible say about abortion?” and I wanted to keep the discussion open by looking at more Bible verses about abortion. This group of passages shows us God’s heart for human life, including life in the womb.

I’m sharing these verses with a whole lot of compassion for every mom in a tough spot. God truly works in mysterious ways, and I know that He often gives us gifts that are unexpected and feel untimely or just incredibly challenging. No matter what you’re going through, He will be with you every step of the way.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Bible Verses About Abortion

Life begins at conception: Bible verse collection

God’s law, or the Ten Commandments, tells us that murder is wrong. Many people today argue that abortion isn’t murder because a pre-born baby is not truly alive. So let’s take a look at when life begins according to the Bible.

Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.” Psalm 51:6

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:13-16

“But now listen, Jacob, my servant,
Israel, whom I have chosen.
This is what the Lord says—
he who made you, who formed you in the womb,
and who will help you:
Do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant,
Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.
For I will pour water on the thirsty land,
and streams on the dry ground;
I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring,
and my blessing on your descendants.
They will spring up like grass in a meadow,
like poplar trees by flowing streams.
Some will say, ‘I belong to the Lord’;
others will call themselves by the name of Jacob;
still others will write on their hand, ‘The Lord’s,’
and will take the name Israel.” Isaiah 44:1-5

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

As you do not know the path of the wind,
or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb,
so you cannot understand the work of God,
the Maker of all things.” Ecclesiastes 11:5

But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’” Romans 9:1

As you can see, the Bible has a lot of verses about the beginning of human life. These verses also answer the question “Does God plan pregnancy?” as well. God’s word says that life begins mysteriously and before conception. It says that God himself forms us in the womb. It also says that it’s possible for God to know us before He formed us. This message is repeated throughout the Bible.

Bible Verses About Respect for Human Life

Science has shown that as soon as an egg is fertilized, it has its full set of chromosomes and carries much of the genetic information a person will have.

When the egg and sperm unite, they form a zygote. The zygote contains 46 chromosomes…The chromosomes determine the genetic make-up of the fetus, including its sex and inherited physical characteristics, such as:

  • hair color
  • eye color
  • blood type
  • height
  • build

The fertilized egg is a human, and he or she is alive. The question is, do we respect that life? Are there Bible verses about respect for human life?

I found that there’s not only more than one Bible verse that says life begins at conception and likely before, but there are also lots of verses about respect for human life.

Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.
Genesis 9:6

Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but whoever kills a human being is to be put to death.
Leviticus 24:21

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20

The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s inmost being.
Proverbs 20:27

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16

I came that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10

The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other commands there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Romans 13:8-10

Babies are a Blessing Verses

I’m a mom of two kiddos who test me, challenge me, grow me, and most of all, bless me. They are the light of my life, they’re a part of me, and they’re also completely independent of me. Being a mom is a mysterious, powerful, joyful thing. It’s difficult. But it’s so, so very worth it.

I thought I’d leave you with some inspiring words on the blessings that babies bring.

He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise the Lord.” Psalm 113:9

Children are a heritage from the Lord,
    offspring a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
    are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
    whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
    when they contend with their opponents in court.” Psalm 127:3-5

Children’s children are a crown to the aged,
    and parents are the pride of their children.” Proverbs 17:6

Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” Mark 9:37

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

Choose Life

So, mama-to-be, I’m praying hard for you. I’m asking that you’d know the power of God’s love for you and the child you’re carrying. I don’t know what you’re going through, but He does, and His plans are for you and your baby to have hope and a future.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

Choosing life is God’s idea, and he encourages us to make the right choice. God understands that this is something we’ll face and even though it seems natural, it’s not an easy decision. He makes sure we know the benefits of choosing life: your children may live and you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. God’s got all kinds of blessings for you.
