31 Encouraging Mother’s Day Scripture to Celebrate Moms

Are you looking for some beautiful Mother’s Day Scripture to celebrate your mom this year?

Every year we celebrate the mothers in our lives on the second Sunday in May.  But the blessing of a mother’s love isn’t confined or contained in one day a year.  Whether you are best friends with your mother, missing your mother, or never knew your mother and adopted a different mother, the Bible has a lot to say about mothers.

The common theme in the Bible about mothers is that mothers are to be respected and their teachings should guide our lives.  Godly mothers are a blessing to their children and to those around them.

What Does the Bible Say About Mother’s Day

Historically, we celebrate the accomplishments and good virtues of mothers on Mother’s Day.  The card, flower, and chocolate industry have capitalized on this celebration.  But the Bible also spoke about the strengths of a Christian mother long before Mother’s Day became a date on our calendars.

God’s love is likened to a mother’s love in Isaiah.  In trying to explain God’s love for the His people, the prophet Isaiah used the best metaphor he could think of.  That of a mother’s love for her child.

Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!  Isaiah 49:15

As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.  Isaiah 66:13

A mother’s influence on her child’s life lasts a lifetime.  When God created mothers, His plan was perfect.  Mothers would have a heart filled with love for their children, they would be generous, they would teach their children in the ways of God, and they would love them unconditionally.

As sin entered the world, there are also pictures of mothers in the Bible who did not do what was right.  They injured their children, neglected them, abandoned them, and abused them.  This is not the ideal that God designed.  His design was perfect.  Mothers would be an example of His unconditional love.

What Does Proverbs Say About Mothers?

King Solomon devoted much of his writings in the book of Proverbs to the blessing and importance of mothers.  There are 15 scriptures about mothers in the book of Proverbs that specifically mention the word mother.  The entire last chapter is devoted to the virtues of a Godly woman, wife, and mother.

Solomon gives us an insight into his relationship with his mother.

For I too was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. Proverbs 4:3

As Solomon grew in wisdom, he understood the value of staying true to the things his mother had taught him when he was young.  The things she had taught him about God and about living a good life, doing what was right in God’s eyes.

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Proverbs 1:8

My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Proverbs 6:20

At the end of Proverbs, Solomon writes an entire chapter about the virtues of a Godly woman.  This Godly woman also happens to be a wife and mother and “her children rise up and call her blessed.”  (Prov. 31:28)

Bible Verses About a Mother’s Love for Her Children

The Bible is filled with examples of a mother’s love for her children.  Here are three specific scriptures about mothers.

Hannah, Samuel’s mother, prayed for her son for years before he was born.  She promised God that she would give her son to Him when he was old enough.  After praying for a child for so long, it’s hard to imagine how she could take him to the temple and leave him there. But that is what she did.  Her love for her son continued for years to come.
