Living for the Praise of His Glory: How Ephesians 1 Shapes Our Purpose

Have you ever wondered what your purpose is? It’s a question we all wrestle with at some point.

The good news is that God’s Word doesn’t leave us guessing. Ephesians 1 lays it out clearly: we are called to live for the praise of His glory.

But what does that actually mean? How do we live in a way that reflects God’s greatness in our everyday lives?

Let’s dive into Ephesians 1 and unpack what it means to live for the praise of His glory, and how this truth shapes our purpose as believers.

What Does “Living for the Praise of His Glory” Mean?

In Ephesians 1:11-12, Paul writes, “In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of His glory.”

Living for the praise of God’s glory means that our lives point back to Him.

It’s like being a mirror—everything we do, say, and even think reflects who God is to the world around us.

When we live in a way that honors Him, we give people a glimpse of His love, grace, and power.

How Ephesians 1 Shapes Our Purpose

Paul kicks off Ephesians with a reminder of who we are in Christ and what God has done for us.

These truths aren’t just nice to know—they’re meant to shape how we live every day. Here’s how:

We Are Chosen and Loved

Ephesians 1:4 says, “For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.”

Think about that—before you were even born, God chose you and set His love on you. When we truly understand that, it changes how we see ourselves.

Instead of striving for approval or success, we can rest in the fact that we are deeply loved by God.

Living for His glory means walking in the confidence of being chosen. It’s not about boasting in ourselves, but about pointing to the One who called us His own.

We Are Redeemed and Forgiven

Paul goes on to say in Ephesians 1:7, “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”

Through Jesus, we’ve been set free from sin and given a fresh start. This forgiveness isn’t something we earned—it’s a gift of grace.

Knowing we are forgiven allows us to live with gratitude and extend that same grace to others.

When we forgive, love, and show kindness, we reflect God’s character and bring glory to Him.

We Have a Purpose

Ephesians 1:11-12 reminds us that our lives aren’t random.

God has a plan, and we are part of it. Whether you’re working, parenting, studying, or serving, your life has eternal significance.

Living for God’s glory means approaching every moment with the mindset, “How can I honor God in this?”

It might be through an encouraging word, a kind action, or simply doing your work with excellence and integrity.

We Are Sealed with the Holy Spirit

Paul closes this section with an incredible promise: “When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance” (Ephesians 1:13-14).

The Holy Spirit is our helper, guiding us to live in a way that honors God.

We’re not left to figure this out on our own—God Himself equips us to live for His glory.

How to Live for His Glory Every Day

Living for the praise of God’s glory doesn’t mean you need to do big, flashy things.

Often, it’s in the small, everyday moments where God’s glory shines brightest. Here are some practical ways to live this out:

  • Start with Gratitude: Take time each day to thank God for what He’s done in your life. Gratitude shifts our focus from ourselves to Him.
  • Be a Light: Let your actions reflect God’s love and kindness. Whether it’s helping a neighbor or being patient with someone difficult, every act of love points back to God.
  • Seek His Guidance: Spend time in prayer and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you. Ask questions like, “How can I honor You in this situation, Lord?”
  • Share His Love: Look for opportunities to talk about what God has done in your life. You don’t need to have all the answers—just share your story.
  • Trust His Plan: Remember that God is working all things together for His purpose, even when life feels uncertain.

Reflection

Living for the praise of His glory isn’t just a lofty ideal—it’s a calling that brings deep joy and fulfillment.

When we align our lives with God’s purpose, we experience the peace that comes from knowing we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

And as we live for His glory, we give others a glimpse of the hope and love found in Christ.

So, how can you live for His glory today? Start where you are. Trust God with the little things, and let Him shine through you.

You don’t have to be perfect—just willing.

And as you step into this purpose, you’ll discover that living for the praise of His glory is the most beautiful and meaningful way to live.
