Reading the Entire Bible in One Year
Every year, it’s a familiar story for many of us…
Your pastor, Sunday school teacher, or favorite Christian blogger shares how important it is for all believers to read God’s Word. You are encouraged and decide that this upcoming January, you are going to start reading the Bible in a year.
This is the year – no matter what!

Setting goals, especially ones that help you to grow spiritually, are what we can commit to Lord and trust Him to help us to follow-through.

It is important that you have a plan. In other words…
How you will go about completing the Bible in a year and commit these plans to the Lord before you get started?
Keep reading so that you can have a plan for what you need to do to make this the year you stick with completing your one year Bible reading plan.
How Do You Complete the Bible in a Year
To begin, let’s define what “a year” can mean when we use it to refer to Bible reading plans:
- Within the first day to the last day of a calendar year
ex: January 1, 2021 – December 31, 2021 - Within 365 days, starting any day of a calendar year
ex: December 11, 2020 – December 10, 2021 - Within any time of the calendar year but not beyond
ex: February 13, 2021 – November 30th, 2021
In other words, you do not have to wait until January 1st to begin a one year Bible reading plan. Whenever you decide to start, it is important to choose which method you would prefer for your bible in a year plan.
Read the Bible from Beginning to End
One of the simplest ways to read the bible in a year to follow is to read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.
I prefer to read God’s Word this way.
It may be a great option for you too if you:
- Don’t want to think too much about jumping around the Bible for your daily reading.
- Like the idea of completing books of the Bible as a whole.
- Are reading through the Bible for the first time.
Read the Bible in Chronological Order
Another popular Bible in a year plan is to read the Word of God chronologically – or in order of Biblical historical events.
Reading the Bible in chronological order may be a more favorable choice for you if you:
- Have read through the Bible previously with another plan and want to try something different.
- Enjoy connecting the dots of history, especially simultaneous historical events in Bible history.
- Don’t mind jumping around in your Bible frequently.
Read One Passage Daily from Both Old and New Testament
Some 52-week Bible reading plans were created to ensure that you read sections from both the old and new testament each day.
These one year Bible plans may appeal to you if you:
- Get bored easily and need a bit of variety in your daily reading.
- Have never read through the Bible before and want to be exposed to both the old and new testament every day.
- Desire to see connections between the old and new testament scriptures as you read.

Once you have identified the way you want to read through the Bible, you can use some helpful resources to help you stay on track.

Bible in One Year App
The Bible in One Year App is perfect for those of us who do almost everything on our phones or iPads. Although this particular app is only for Apple users, there is also the Bible app that is compatible with all devices.
By installing the Bible in One Year App (or a similar app), you will have your daily bible reading assignment at your fingertips!

You can also set your plan to start on any day during the year and bookmark your digital bible app to take notes.
One Year Bible
If you’re like me and prefer to use a traditional Bible – so you can flip its actual pages – the One Year Bible may be what you need.
This Bible was designed with scripture passages to be read each day of the year, with Genesis chapter 1 being assigned for January 1st.
The One Year Bible can be found in the traditional Genesis-to-Revelation and Chronological editions.
The only downside is that if you don’t start the first day of the year, you would need to keep track of your reading days on your own.
Otherwise, it is a great idea to never have to guess what you need to read for the day because each day’s date is printed on the top of its assigned pages of the Bible.

If you search for one-year Bible reading plans, you will notice that various websites are dedicated to equipping people with various plans.
As we discussed before, there are one-year Bible plans depending on how you want to read through it.

One year Bible Reading Plan Printable
You may prefer a printable one-year bible reading plan, that you can carry in your bible or journal.
Out of all of the resources, this is my favorite because much like turning the pages of a Bible, I enjoy taking my pen to a physical piece of paper after reading the day’s scripture.
I like to imagine that God created some of us as “tactile” disciples!
