Turning Curses Into Blessings

“We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you!” 1 Chronicles 20:12 ESV

March 13th, 2020 is one of those dates that is now carved in my inner most memories. I was working out in our basement when a text came through my phone.

All it said was “Will you be doing a FB post about services being cancelled??”

I quickly checked my email and found an explosion of emails regarding the government shut down due to COVID. I did not realize it at the time, but that was the day life changed. I went from working 15 hours a week at my church to basically working full time for the coming months. My job changed, my mothering changed, my faith changed, my relationships changed; everything had to be re-learned.

You may have a similar story about when life changed for you in 2020. Looking back, it seems like our lives were suddenly cursed. We were powerless to change or go back.

How refreshing. What a blessing. We needed it.

Our curses are often God’s blessings – but only if we choose to see them!

Did 2020 wake you up? It should have. It should have made you feel powerless, weak, and reliant upon a greater power. Over the last 2 years, I have come to love the following verse,

“We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you!” 1 Chronicles 20:12 ESV

Some of the 2020 curses still are raw to my heart. How about you, do past years still have some open wounds? Personally, we all probably have some wounds, but we also have shared wounds. COVID-19 brought wounds, political tension brought wounds, racial tensions brought wounds, financial turmoil brought wounds, and many of those curses are shared.

The good news is that God is in the business of turning curses into blessings.

Do you remember 2019? The stock market was booming, church attendance was steady, there was political drama, but not political war, and for the most part, the country was soaring high. We were complacent, especially the Church.

Do you know what happens when we become complacent? God in his sovereignty shakes things up. I think that is what he did in 2020, he shook his people up.

Truthfully, we needed it. 2020 brought many people to their knees and caused us to turn to Jesus. Instead of feeling comfortable in our ‘good lives’, we started to seek something bigger and better than ourselves.

What have you seen more of because of 2020?

I have seen God’s people turn to prayer like never before Prayer groups are becoming a strong force in my community. I have seen churches that never intended on live streaming, suddenly open their virtual doors.

The message of Jesus stretches across social media platforms on Sunday mornings.

The greatest gift of 2020 is that it has caused people to seek after God. He has turned our curse into an eternal blessing!

Where is Your Focus?

Are your eyes still humbly on God, or has complacency set back in? Are you so used to the new normal that your heart has drifted once again from our Lord and Savior?

We do not know what to do, but our eyes should be fixed on you.

The more I hear that verse the more powerful it seems. It is a complete acknowledgment that we are clueless in our knowledge, but God is sovereign. In that humility there is strength. When we turn our eyes to Him instead of fighting to regain control, we will find our curses turning into blessings.

It is time to set our eyes once again on God. Humble yourself before him today and return to his blessings. What you deem as a curse, God just may use as a great blessing to turn people to him.

Dear Lord of the universe. We come to you in submission and ask for your blessings to reign down. We know that you are the God that turns curses into blessings. Sometimes it’s hard for me to see the blessings in hard situations. Please show me the blessings for your honor and glory. Amen.
